Atletico Madrid edged city rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title in dramatic fashion by coming from behind to beat Real Valladolid in the final game with an iconic goal from Luis Suarez.

Atletico clinched their first title in seven years and their 11th overall.
It was a highly satisfying triumph for Los Colchoneros as they finished two points ahead of defending champions Real, who end the season without silverware.

Uruguay striker Suarez started the season by being told by Barca boss Ronald Koeman he was not in his plans for this season but went on to score 21 league goals – including the decisive one.

A tearful Suarez said afterwards: “I am delighted the way Atletico have appreciated me and given me the chance to keep showing I can perform on this stage. I thank them for trusting in me, a lot of people have suffered with me, my wife, my children.

“I have been playing football for many years and this is the year my family and I have suffered the most. It is an amazing feeling to have performed on the final day of the season.

The 2020/21 La Liga season ended with Atletico crowned champions of Spain. Leonel Messi won his 8th Pichichi, 5th in a row to surpass Di Stefáno & Hugo Sánchez’s record of 4 in a row with his 30 goals while Jan oblak won the Ricardo Zamora award a record fifth time.

Champions Atletico madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla all qualified for next season’s champions league respectively while Real Sociedad, Betis and Villarreal all booked a spot in next season’s Europa league. Huesca, Valladolid and Eibar were all relegated. Aspas ended the season with the most assist 13.

The La Liga title race was set up for a thrilling conclusion and it did not disappoint.
