Three teams separated by three points with one game to play – Can Lille hold on and end Paris St-Germain’s dominance?
PSG have won Ligue 1 seven times in the previous eight seasons – Monaco were champions in 2016-17 – but start the final day on 79 points, one behind leaders Lille.
Last season, PSG were awarded the title after it was announced the season would not resume because of the coronavirus pandemic. they were 12 points clear of nearest rivals Marseille, who had 10 games left.
Lille needs a win not not else to secure the league one title since 2011. On Sunday, this fascinating title race could still see the top three all finish on 80 points if Lille lose, PSG draw and Monaco, who start third on 77 points, win.
Unlike in Spain, goal difference would decide the title. That would favour Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG, who have a far superior advantage on their two title rivals.
Lille takes on 12th place Angers in an away game while Paris St Germain visit 16th place Brest and Monaco has a huge mountain to climb when they take on 6th place Lens who are fighting for a Europa spot. Monaco could only win the league if both Lille and PSG lose they game with a big win because of an inferior goal difference.
“Although we don’t have a Neymar or Mbappe or superstars on massive wages who can score 20 or 30 goals a season, we have a team,” Lille Captain Jose Fonte said.

“I have been playing football for many years and this is the year my family and I have suffered the most. It is an amazing feeling to have performed on the final day of the season.

Will Simeone deliver the title?
Two teams separated by two points with one game to play. One thing already certain before Saturday’s title-deciding games is the crown will be staying in Spain’s capital. Atletico madrid at the top of the league come up as a relegation threatening Valladolid while Defending champions Real madrid play a no nonsense Villarreal on Saturday 22.
Diego Simeone’s side would be looking for a win against Real Valladolid to secure a first league title since 2014. Anything aside that Anything less opens the door for neighbours Real, who entertain Unai Emery’s Villarreal.
Atletico have 83 points but a last-day draw and a Real win would ensure both Madrid clubs finish on 84 points. But head-to-head record – instead of goal difference – coming into play, Real would be crowned kings of Spain as they have taken four points off Atletico in their two meetings in 2020-21.
Star man Luis Suarez has 20 league goals in 31 matches while Benzema has 22 goals going into the final day both teams would be depending on them for goals. With both Atletico and Real’s games kicking-off at 17:00 BST, it points to an exciting end to the season..
Will Lille hold on?

From boycotting social media for days at the end of April, to follow up of those commiting racist abuses, the Premier League has announced the arrest of 8 men involved in racist abuse with 4 others under investigation.
During the Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur match on 11 April, an unnamed player was targeted with a series of offensive and racist remarks on Twitter.
The abuse was picked up by Man Utd’s online reporting tool and passed on to the police. The Met worked with both clubs as well as social media companies and other police forces to identify the perpetrators.
The 12 men in total are from England and Wales, have each been arrested, or interviewed under caution, under suspicion of using words or behaviour, or displaying written material with intent to stir up racial hatred.
“This action makes it abundantly clear that police will not stand for racist thuggery, even if it is committed online,”
The fight continues
English football is also calling for the Online Safety Bill announced in this month’s Queen’s Speech to be enacted in legislation as soon as possible. This would provide legislative and regulatory frameworks robust and effective in requiring social media companies to do more to prevent, detect and remove discriminatory abuse from their platforms. If this is done it would go a long way to hit against online abuse and racist acts.
