After speculations of him treating to withdraw from the competition despite going through for the last 16 after a match with German international Dominik Koepfer. The match which he won 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 and had been due to play Matteo Berrettini on Monday for a place in the quarterfinals.

The declining from the competition is because of Federer said he wants to protect his knee following two operations in 2020. “After discussions with my team, I’ve decided I will need to pull out of Roland Garros today,” the 39-year-old said in a statement in Sunday.

“After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery.” Federer said.

Federer, who will turn 40 on August 8, is targeting a ninth Wimbledon title later this month said “I am thrilled to have gotten three matches under my belt,” added Federer. “There is no greater feeling than being back on court.”

Do what you love,” Meanwhile Federer replied: “Thank you Sir Andy, the feeling is mutual. You gotta love it. See you on the grass.”
