UEFA EURO 2020 – Statistics & Facts

The Euros is the primary association football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), determining the continental champion of Europe.

The competition has been held every four years since 1960, except for 2020, when it was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. Founded in 1958, 63-years ago, scheduled to be in the even-numbered year between World Cup tournaments, it was originally called the European Nations’ Cup, changing to the current name in 1968.

A total of 54 teams across Europe are eligible for the competition and after qualifications are played just 24 teams make it to the tournament itself.

The idea for a pan-European football tournament was first proposed by the French Football Federation’s secretary-general Henri Delaunay in 1927, but it was not until 1958 that the tournament was started, three years after Delaunay’s death. In honour of Delaunay, the trophy awarded to the champions is named after him.

The UEFA European Championships (EURO) 2020 was originally scheduled to take place from June 12 to July 12, 2020, but, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it was decided on March 17, 2020 that the tournament would be postponed by one year to be held from June 11 to July 11, 2021.

The Euros first took place in 1960 and have taken place every four years since. So far, there have been 15 tournaments, making EURO 2020 (held in 2021) number 16.

This year’s Euro has something different from the others, for the first time in the tournament’s history, the matches are not to take place in one (or two) countries, but across 11 countries all over Europe.

Wembley is the biggest stadium for this year’s Euro with 24 teams taking part as Spain and Germany stand as highest winners of the competition both winning it in three occasions. The 15 European Championship tournaments have been won by ten different national teams.
